CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS IN NORTHUMBERLAND

A new guide to visual arts organisations in Northumberland has been launched across the County.

A new guide to contemporary visual arts organisations across Northumberland has been launched this week by Northumberland Arts Development – a partnership of cultural venues and organisations in the County.

The guide which has been organised by Berwick Visual Arts with funding support from Active Northumberland, Northumberland County Council and Arts Council England details the diverse range of work that the public are able to experience when visiting the venues. These include exhibitions by local and international artists, residencies, outdoor sculpture displays and workshops and projects that all ages can get involved in.

Organisations include Allenheads Contemporary Arts in the west of the County, who for over 20 years have been providing placement, residency and exhibition opportunities for emerging artists in the region; Cheeseburn Sculpture, a new organisation which presents contemporary sculpture and artists projects in the grounds of Cheeseburn Grange Hall near Stamfordham and Whistle Art Stop in Haltwhistle who showcase the work of new and emerging graduate artists from across the North-East.

The organisers hope that the guide will give tourists an insight into the vibrant cultural offer of Northumberland and encourage them to spend more time visiting art galleries and organisations in the County.

James Lowther, Head of Visual Art for Berwick Visual Arts said ‘It is wonderful to be able to see in one guide the number of contemporary visual arts organisations in the County who are supporting artists to live and work in Northumberland and often create work inspired by our rich culture and heritage’

Over 30,000 copies of guide will be distributed around tourist attractions, tourist information centres and other cultural venues across the North-East over the coming weeks and can also be downloaded online at www.berwickvisualarts.co.uk
