WW2 involved civilians like no other conflict in British history. Home life was transformed; families were split up, as adults were called up for war service, and children were evacuated from cities such as Newcastle to the relative safety of towns like Berwick.

Daily life was dominated by the disruption and destruction of air raids. Shortages made luxuries of ice-cream, stockings and scented soap, and food rationing helped make the nation ‘fighting fit’.
