As we all get ready to swoon over the new ‘Wuthering Heights’ film, I thought it would be good to screen the director’s first film – Emerald Fennell’s ‘Promising Young Woman’ from 2020, on Sunday 1st March at 7pm, in the Barrels pub. It’s an excellent debut in which Carey Mulligan gives a career-best performance as Cassie, who works in a coffee bar by day (after dropping out of medical school), but spends nights practicing a novel method of making young men aware of the position of power they inhabit, and so often abuse. ‘Nice guys’ are not always nice guys, she proves.

There is a lot of humour laced in the film along with razor-sharp social commentary on toxic masculinity and undeserved privilege, and anyone who saw Fennell’s last film, ‘Saltburn’, will know to expect twists and, at times, uncomfortable viewing, but this is a very powerful movie that stays with you long after seeing it. Great soundtrack and supporting cast, too.

Space is limited, so to book a seat, email me at d_purvis_condottieri@hotmail.com. Free entry, free popcorn, but cash donations are much appreciated.
