Daisy Edis was a pioneering photographer who worked from her family’s studio in Durham in the first half of the 20th century.
The Edis family had been connected with photography since its earliest days, working in London before making the move to the north east.
The amazing archive of images created by Daisy and her father John Edis are held by Durham University and Beamish Museum.
Ariana Preston, currently working on her PhD at Durham University, will speak about Daisy Edis’ life and career, and about women’s impact on photography both in the region and in wider photographic history through the era she was working – from 1901 to 1964.
The talk will also explore the story of the Edis family of photographers and their studio and surviving collections, and how the studio came to be re-constructed at Beamish.
It’s a fascinating story about how Daisy balanced being both a business woman and studio owner with her artistic practice and developed a creative identity for herself.
The talk is open to all and free to attend.
Location: The Parish Centre, Berwick Parish Church, Parade, TD15 1DF
