The Curfew Run

The Curfew Run is a unique and historic race held annually in Berwick-upon-Tweed, inspired by the town’s centuries-old tradition of the Curfew Bell. The race challenges participants to complete a 1.2861-mile loop around Berwick’s Elizabethan Town Walls before the Curfew Bell finishes tolling, which takes 13 minutes.

Dating back to a time when the ringing of the curfew signalled the town’s nightly lockdown, the run now symbolises a celebration of Berwick’s rich heritage. It’s open to runners aged 13 and over and attracts both local participants and visitors.

A family-friendly Curfew Fun Run takes place earlier in the evening, encouraging children, families, and casual runners to join the festivities.

Location start – behind The Straw Yard

Course Distance: 1.2861 miles (officially measured by UK Athletics, Certificate No. 17/168)

Goal: Beat the toll of the Curfew Bell: 13 minutes!

Race Licence: England Athletics Licence No: 29235

Curfew Fun Run: 7:30 PM

A relaxed and family-friendly event open to all ages:

Open to: Young children (with or without parents), families, and fun runners

Children under 8: Must be accompanied by an adult (who must also be entered)

Entry Fee: £4 (children), £8 (adults)

Entry Deadline (Online): Midnight, Sunday 6th July

Entry on the Night: From 6:00 PM outside The Barracks (subject to availability, spaces are limited)

Race Limit: 175 runners

Timing: No official timing, this is a non-competitive event to encourage participation

Curfew Run – 8:00 PM

A timed race for more competitive runners:

Minimum Age: 13 years and over (on race day)

Entry Fee: £8 (online), £10 (on the night)

Entry Deadline (Online): Midnight, Monday 7th July

Race Limit: 150 runners

Timing: Chip-timed by KitST for all named runners

All race numbers for both events will be available for collection from 6:00 PM onwards at the Registration Desk outside The Barracks.
