Fashion for the Fashionable in the 18th Century

3rd – 7th April 2023 | 10am-4pm | Paxton House

For five days from 3rd- 7th April 2023, two Glasgow University students of Historic Dress and Textile History will recreate a high fashion Georgian gown live in front of visitors. This unique event runs from 10am-4pm in the elegant Picture Gallery at Paxton House and will explore the techniques employed by the mantua makers, who were responsible for the complex construction of Georgian dresses. The gown, which will be made from scratch, will become an elegant “sackback” dress with a distinctive pleated train falling from the shoulders, popular around 1770. The two students will be working in recreated period costume and will be happy to answer questions from visitors.
