Summer 2019 - What's on

Berwick-upon-Tweed plays host to many annual events during the Summer months. July sees the annual Curfew Run in Berwick, where entrants of all ages run around the Elizabethan Walls while the curfew bell tolls.

This busy month continues with the Tweedmouth Feast and the Crowning of the Salmon Queen and the Mouth of the Tweed Festival. There is also the Music at Paxton festival which takes place just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed.

August begins with the Minden Day Parade, commemorating the King's Own Scottish Borderer's part in the Battle of Minden (1759). We return to family fun events at the Seaside Festival in August.

There are exhibitions taking place throughout the Summer at the Gymnasium Gallery and Berwick Museum and Art Gallery within the Barracks. For theatre, cinema, comedy and live music events, the Maltings Arts Centre is the premier venue in North Northumberland.

There are car Boot sales in Castlegate car park every Sunday (May-Sept) and on Tweedside Trading Estate, as well as the twice-weekly Street Markets held on Marygate and the Buttermarket (under the Town Hall).

For spectators sporting events visit Shielfield Park (Tweedmouth), home to Berwick Rangers Football Club and Berwick Bandits Speedway. If you would like to participate in some physical activities and events, go to the Swan Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool, also in Tweedmouth.

Summer at Dockside
Exhibition

Dockside Gallery showcases contemporary British and European artists with much of the artwork reflecting the gallery’s surroundings of working docks and coastal landscapes. The artwork is inspiring, uplifting and changes regularly.

Shows & Displays

Music at Paxton, a summer festival of superb international chamber music, takes place in Paxton House on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders from 19th-28th July 2019.

Exhibition

This major new exhibition of works by JMW Turner, one of the most renowned of English Romantic artists, explores his transformation from an architectural draughtsman, when he set out on his first North of England tour in 1797, to a poet of the landscape sublime, which culminated in the arrival at his most northerly point in England, the village of Norham in Northumberland.

Tweedmouth Feast is a traditional event, with origins in the 12th Century, which celebrates salmon fishing on the River Tweed, including the Crowning of the Salmon Queen.

 

Minden Day 2008
Ceremony

Minden Day commemorates the King's Own Scottish Borderers' participation in the Battle of Minden in 1759. The Day starts at 10am on the Barracks Square.

Then, at 12.30pm, the parade of bands, regular soldiers and veterans marches through the town, with the salute being taken at the Town Hall.

Kik Plastic Berwick Beach Clean
Outdoor Event

Kiko Matthews is cycling 7200km around the UK’s coast, building a community against plastic. Kiko will arrive on Spittal beach on Monday 15th July and you can join the beach clean from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Meet at the Family Fun Centre car park at 5.30pm. 

Land Ahoy
Family event

Jump on board the Hispaniola as it sets sail for a week of treasure hunting, treason and pirate training. Bring the classic tale of Treasure Island to life in the grounds of Paxton House. A fun filled 5 days of drama activities, devising, script work and of course throw in the odd YO HO HO and away we go to see what treasures can be plundered from that there big old house. Ages 7-11.

Berwick Festival Opera is delighted to continue its successful partnership with Byre Opera, who are touring their latest beautifully sung and elegantly staged production to the dramatic setting of Berwick’s Peace Hall. For 2019, they’re presenting a double bill of contrasting British 20th Century one act operas, a tragedy and a comedy.

SKERRYVORE create a unique fusion of folk, trad, rock and Americana that represents all the different personalities and upbringing of the 8 band members who hail from different regions of Scotland.

Take two brothers, Daniel (Accordion) and Martin Gillespie (pipes, whistles and accordion), steeped in the Scottish west coast ceilidh tradition on the Isle of Tiree, and add in friends Fraser West (drums) and Alec Dalglish (guitar and vocals), with a background in brass bands, wind bands, jazz bands, and with blues, folk and country influences, and you have the 2005, embryonic Skerryvore.

The annual Berwick Food and Beer Festival is back 6th-8th September 2019. 

The Beer Festival opens with 'Meet the Brewers' 5pm on Friday, and the Food Festival opens 10am on Saturday, with Beer festival from 12noon. Now in its eleventh year, the event attracts thousands of visitors from around the UK.

Berwick's iconic Royal Border Bridge is illuminated each evening from dusk, with a changing programme of lights.

To mark occasions, raise awareness of causes and to commemorate special dates; the illuminations are set to a significant colour. This creates a special spectacle and a unique opportunity for photography.

Headteacher Mr Shaw invites you come and enjoy a performance that includes the entire school - around 170 pupils (ages 3½ to 9 years). I love the smell of improv in the evening! It’s 2019 and we can’t seem to get rid of them, so Damp Knight Comedy are back for a 7th time following 2 more sell-out shows.

Comprising mainly of their signature brand of insane improvised comedy, paired with filmed and live sketches debuted at this show, Damp Knight Comedy take elements of popular improv TV shows (such as Mock the Week, Fast and Loose & Whose Line Is It Anyway?), add a little Monty Python flavour and hit fast-forward for a night of unforgettable, high-octane comedy, entirely inspired by the audience’s suggestions.
