Summer 2019 - What's on

Berwick-upon-Tweed plays host to many annual events during the Summer months. July sees the annual Curfew Run in Berwick, where entrants of all ages run around the Elizabethan Walls while the curfew bell tolls.

This busy month continues with the Tweedmouth Feast and the Crowning of the Salmon Queen and the Mouth of the Tweed Festival. There is also the Music at Paxton festival which takes place just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed.

August begins with the Minden Day Parade, commemorating the King's Own Scottish Borderer's part in the Battle of Minden (1759). We return to family fun events at the Seaside Festival in August.

There are exhibitions taking place throughout the Summer at the Gymnasium Gallery and Berwick Museum and Art Gallery within the Barracks. For theatre, cinema, comedy and live music events, the Maltings Arts Centre is the premier venue in North Northumberland.

There are car Boot sales in Castlegate car park every Sunday (May-Sept) and on Tweedside Trading Estate, as well as the twice-weekly Street Markets held on Marygate and the Buttermarket (under the Town Hall).

For spectators sporting events visit Shielfield Park (Tweedmouth), home to Berwick Rangers Football Club and Berwick Bandits Speedway. If you would like to participate in some physical activities and events, go to the Swan Leisure Centre and Swimming Pool, also in Tweedmouth.

Rob Newman's Total Eclipse of Descartes
Shows & Displays

In a world gone crazy, can philosophy help? This sparklingly brilliant new show tries to give you the answer. Rob Newman (stand up legend, best-selling novelist, Radio 4 Sony Award Winner) attempts to piece together a philosophy for our troubled times by sifting through 3000 years of thought: from Pythagoras to Artificial Intelligence by way of Pavlov’s dogs, Jane Goodall’s chimpanzees and Frankie Howerd’s trousers.

Earl Grey Saxophones: At the Movies
Shows & Displays

The Earl Grey Saxes are made up of 4/5 of the Borders Big Band Sax Section: Paul Cormie, Sam Lord, Ewan Mitchell and Camille Castledine, along with our multitasking duo Pam Toward and Cath Cormie on everything from violin to the kitchen sink. We have been playing in the big band and in other groups together for years and that coupled with our love of 'posh tea' and homemade cake gave Paul the idea to form us into a group.

This major new exhibition of works by JMW Turner, one of the most renowned of English Romantic artists, explores his transformation from an architectural draughtsman, when he set out on his first North of England tour in 1797, to a poet of the landscape sublime, which culminated in the arrival at his most northerly point in England, the village of Norham in Northumberland.

Shows & Displays

Berwick Festival Opera’s latest fully staged co-production of a classic Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera is their hilariously full-blown assault on Romance and Melodrama The Pirates of Penzance. Set amongst a daring yet strangely tender-hearted band of Cornish smugglers, this re-orchestration by Matthew Rooke is given an extra dose of theatrical flamboyance with a staging that’s been lovingly updated to the 1970s.

Berwick's iconic Royal Border Bridge is illuminated each evening from dusk, with a changing programme of lights.

To mark occasions, raise awareness of causes and to commemorate special dates; the illuminations are set to a significant colour. This creates a special spectacle and a unique opportunity for photography.
